The Thousand Brains Project is officially open! Plus, Jeff addresses Sam Altman’s manifesto and talks brain theory with David Eagleman in this edition of the Numenta Newsletter.
The Thousand Brains Project Publishes Open-Source Code
The Thousand Brains Project team has been hard at work preparing for the release of their open-source general AI framework, and this week they pushed it live! As shared in our press release, this exciting milestone is an important one for the project, which is dedicated to building a new type of AI that works on the same principles as the neocortex, as described in the Thousand Brains Theory. The newly released code base–named Monty, after neuroscientist Vernon Mountcastle–is the first implementation of these sensorimotor principles. All related patents are under a non-assert pledge, and the code is published under the permissive MIT license, which means anyone is welcome to use the code for research or commercial purposes. Watch this short video with project director Viviane Clay to learn more, and visit the website to see the many ways you can get involved and start contributing today. |
Join the Thousand Brains Project Team on December 4 for a Live Launch Event!
Mark your calendars and claim your spot for a virtual kickoff webinar hosted by the Thousand Brains Project Team. They will present the origin, vision, and execution of this new open-source research initiative. The event will culminate with an open Q&A session, so bring your questions for the team.
Truly Intelligent AI and the Brain’s Sensorimotor Principles – a New Essay by Jeff Hawkins
In this essay published in Fast Company, Jeff addresses some recent claims by Sam Altman and other deep learning advocates about the future of AI. Jeff writes,
“These claims are absurd, and we shouldn’t let them pass without criticism.”
Read the full article to see what else Jeff has to say and what he believes will replace deep learning as the central technology for creating artificial intelligence.
Jeff Hawkins on Inner Cosmos with David Eagleman
Jeff recently appeared on renowned neuroscientist David Eagleman’s Inner Cosmos podcast in an episode titled, “Does your brain have one model of the world or thousands?” I won’t spoil it by telling you where Jeff landed on that question, but the conversation between these longtime friends and colleagues is well worth the listen.
The AI Conference Talk: Transforming AI Through Neuroscience
Earlier this fall, I gave a talk at The AI Conference on how neuroscience insights hold the potential to change the way we build and deploy artificial intelligence. Watch the 10 minute recording to explore how harnessing the brain’s efficiency can make today’s AI systems greener, smarter, and more powerful.
