In this edition, I’m excited to share news on the recent launch of the Thousand Brains Project.
A Special Message from the Director of the Thousand Brains Project
Last month we announced a great new open-source initiative at Numenta, partially funded by the Gates Foundation, called the Thousand Brains Project. We are incredibly excited about this project and see it having a big impact on the field of AI in the near future. Numenta has always been convinced that we must study the brain to build truly intelligent systems. This project comes at a time when many are realizing the enormous costs of running current state-of-the-art AI systems and are looking for more efficient and robust alternatives. We plan to build such an alternative system based on what we have learned from years of neuroscience research and published in the Thousand Brains Theory. With the Thousand Brains Project, Numenta will be able to accelerate its research and return to many of its open research practices. Many of you will be delighted to hear that we are posting our meeting recordings again and creating documentation, videos, and other content around our research and engineering progress. We have been working on this project internally for a while and are convinced that our approach has the potential to transform the AI landscape in the next few years. By making the project open source, we hope to get many more brilliant researchers and engineers around the world involved and incorporate their ideas and knowledge. We also hope that once the implementation is more mature, people will try our novel approach in their real-world applications and see the benefits over conventional AI approaches. If this project has piqued your interest, please check out our website below and sign up for our mailing list to receive updates. If you have any questions, ideas, suggestions, or proposals for collaboration, don’t hesitate to contact us at thousandbrains@numenta.com. I am beyond excited and honored to be part of this visionary endeavor, and can’t wait to see what this journey has in store for us. Regards,
