Despite their success, today’s deep learning technologies remain severely limited compared to human intelligence. At Numenta, we are one of the few research groups developing practical machine learning algorithms that are constrained by neuroscience, tested, and implemented in software and hardware.  Numenta is looking for a research focused engineering manager to lead a team focused on optimizing and scaling our neuroscience inspired machine learning algorithms on various hardware platforms.  As a successful candidate, you will have an understanding of how to lead both research and engineering projects, knowledge of efficient algorithms implementations, and experience with machine learning techniques.  

You will lead a small team of engineers who are passionate about applying innovative new technologies to move machine intelligence to the next stage.  You will report to, and take technical direction from, the Vice President of Research. You will spend about half your time managing people, projects and Numenta’s partner relationships, and the other half doing individual contributor work (coding, algorithms research, and/ or writing academic papers for publication).

Numenta is located on the San Francisco Peninsula in downtown Redwood City, a short walk from the Caltrain station. 

Required Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of engineering or research people management experience
  • Overall software development experience for at least 5 years
  • Advanced degree in computer science, PhD preferred
  • Track record of attracting, recruiting, hiring and mentoring great people
  • Strong multi-tasking skills and excellent problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Academic publishing experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong C/C++ and Python programming skills
  • Strong knowledge of hardware architectures required, with experience working on embedded systems or compute intensive hardware architectures such as FPGAs, GPUs, etc. desired.
  • Experience with machine learning strongly desired.
