The Computational Theories of the Brain Workshop is one of the four workshops under The Brain and Computation, a semester-long program by UC Berkeley that covers open questions in Brain Science with computational components, research problems in Brain Science where computer scientists could take the lead in solving, and areas of computer science that neuroscience can help progress.

In this talk, Jeff Hawkins proposes that cortical columns in the neocortex learn maps of objects, similar to how entorhinal cortex and hippocampus learn maps of environments. He proposes that cortical columns contain analogs of grid and analog head direction cells, which represent the location and orientation of the sensory patch relative to specific objects. Through movement, he explains how cortical columns pair sensory input and location to learn the structure of objects.
